Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis

 

Psoriasis and peptidoglycans—Peptidoglycan appears to be a major causative factor for psoriasis (Trends Immunol 2006 Dec[1]): Peptidoglycan is a major cell-wall component of Gram-positive bacteria and has been detected within antigen-presenting cells of patients with psoriasis. Furthermore, the skin of patients with psoriasis shows Th1 cells that are specifically responsive to streptococcal and/or staphylococcal peptidoglycans; this indicates that peptidoglycan is probably an important T-cell stimulator which contributes to psoriasis. Additionally, patients with psoriasis appear to be genetically predisposed to disorders associated with peptidoglycans because their immune cells are altered in such a way as to allow for enhanced T-cell response to the bacterial antigens such as peptidoglycans. The authors conclude, “These observations suggest that peptidoglycan is a major aetiological factor for psoriasis and emphasize the importance of peptidoglycan in bacterial-infection-induced inflammatory disease.”
