Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis
 

Psoriasis and peptidoglycans—Patients with cutaneous and arthritic psoriasis have elevated IgA antibodies against streptococcal peptidoglycan-polysaccharide. (Clin Exp Rheumatol 1997 Jul-Aug[1]): Patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis have elevated IgA levels specific to streptococcal peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS); antibody levels do no vary with disease severity. Very remarkably, the authors concluded by stating, “The results suggest chronic mucosal stimulation of lymphocytes by long-lived streptococcal antigens in patients with psoriasis...” Readers should appreciate that the evidence linking psoriasis with mucosal infections with the streptococcal bacteria is consistent and very strong. The mucosal surfaces of the nose, sinuses, and throat are the most common locations for chronic streptococcal bacteria colonization/dysbiosis.
