Psoriasis and immunostimulation via bacterial DNA—Enhanced activation of blood mononuclear cells in patients with psoriasis vulgaris mediated by streptococcal antigen with bacterial DNA (J Invest Dermatol 2009 Nov[1]): The authors note that streptococcal infection has an intimate relationship with psoriasis even though the specific role of streptococcal DNA has not been previously clarified. Therefore, these researchers investigated the effect of streptococcal DNA on lymphocyte proliferation and activation as well as cytokine secretion in psoriasis. As has been previously reported by other researchers, the authors of this paper also found that peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from psoriatic patients had higher proliferative responses upon stimulation by streptococcal antigens (SA) when compared with those from healthy individuals. Pretreatment of the streptococcal antigens with an enzyme that degrades DNA (DNase-1) reduced the amount of immune stimulation elicited following exposure of immune cells to streptococcal antigens, thus implicating streptococcal DNA as having an important role in the induction of the pro-inflammatory response elicited by streptococcal antigens in psoriatic immune cells. The authors concluded, “This study demonstrates the integral function of SA, particularly streptococcal DNA, in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.”
